Lymington residents advised over door step callers
Lymington residents are being encouraged to report unsolicited callers to police. It follows a number of incidents in the area since mid November.
Police are also investigating a number of reports of charity box thefts from local businesses.
PC Steve Wright of Lymington police station said: “Many charities and businesses legitimately call at homes, however we believe some Lymington residents may have given money to callers collecting fraudulently on behalf of charities.
“We have also seen a rise in thefts of charity boxes from shops and other businesses in the town. This type of crime is despicable. People believe they are donating money to help others but it goes straight into the fraudsters’ pocket.
“To help us gain a better understanding of the extent of the problem I would encourage anyone who has received a call from a person collecting on behalf of charity, or has had a charity box stolen from their business since mid November to contact us.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Wright at Lymington police station on 101 giving as much detail as possible. You can also call Crimestoppers, the charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Callers from outside Hampshire and the Isle of Wight should dial 0845 045 45 45.
